An Expat Story

Inna Selipanov is a foreigner living in Helsingborg for a little over 2 years now. Although she is technically American, she considers herself to be a citizen of the world. Being of Russian heritage, she spent the formative years of her adolescence and young adulthood in California. This was followed by a collective 14 years in Germany, between Berlin and Frankfurt, and then came the relocation to Sweden. In all the places she goes, Inna takes her ever-growing family with her. Initially following her husband’s career endeavours, Inna has been on a journey of her own personal and professional discovery. And even though there are many bumps along the way, the journey is far from ended.

Thursday 16 September 18:00 – Welcome to Helsingborg

Just arrived in town? This is a popular time of year for new arrivals and we want to do our best to make you feel welcome!

Our first speaker will be Eva-Lotta Bergström from Helsingborgs Stad, who will talk to us about Helsingborg in its historical, geographical, and commercial context and the city’s plans for the future. We will also be joined by Kristina Weberg, the coordinator of Visionsfonden (the Vision Fund), Helsingborg Municipality’s unique grant which supports great new ideas in the city, and a local SFI school, who will talk about their course options and the sign-up process for learning Swedish in Helsingborg. Dimitrij Aleshkov, entrepreneur and active citizen, will talk to us about an opportunity for local volunteering and engagement and Parul Ghosh will introduce her website This Is Helsingborg.

We’ll let you know about HIC’s plans for the autumn and how we support the local international community. There will also be time for Q & A.

Doors open at 17:30 for refreshments and our first speaker will begin at 18:00.

Due to COVID-19, we are running this as a “hybrid” event, with a smaller audience than usual and a Facebook live stream. Please sign up if you would like to join us in person!

Our priority for this event is to welcome new arrivals, so if you have already attended the same talk last year, please wait until the day before the event to check if there are any available spaces in the audience – thank you for your understanding!

Tuesday 14 September 10:00 – How does Sweden’s social insurance agency work?

Photo: Magnus Liam Karlsson/imagebank.sweden.se

WEBINAR: Social Insurance in Sweden is unlike many other countries in the world as it covers basically everyone who works and lives in Sweden. The insurance is an essential part of the public welfare system that protects the needs of the individual, family, and companies.

The purpose of Sweden’s Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) is to provide financial security at various stages of life. However, it can be difficult to understand how it works and which benefits you and your family are entitled to if you are new to the country.

We’re pleased to join International Citizen Hub Lund for this event.

They have invited Henrik Malmquist, a representative from Försäkringskassan, to go through the basics and answer your questions. Some of the questions that will be addressed include:

Do I need to register at Försäkringskassan?
What happens if I’m sick and can’t work for a couple of weeks?
Am I insured if I travel to another country?
What benefits can my family receive?

During our events we sometimes take photographs and short videos to share on the HIC website and social media. If you prefer not to be in any photos or videos, please let us know at the beginning of the event. Thank you!

Thursday 8 April 18:00 – Volunteers with Vision!

Photo: The Hilary Clark

Wondering how you can be involved in your community this spring and summer? Join us online to find out about four exciting projects which would love your help! We’ll hear from:

Helsingbutt – a Vision Fund project that is looking to clean up the city from cigarette butts and discarded snus, then create an art installation with the collected litter. They are looking for 25 volunteers in total. Nantli and Daniela are both from Mexico and have been living in Helsingborg since August 2020.

Barns Lekparti (Children’s Play Party) – a Vision Fund project which will work with children and different social groups to design and create an adventure play space in Helsingborg. Volunteers will have an active role in helping build the play space and will have many opportunities to learn new skills, too! Kevin and Lili are from the USA and have been living in Sweden for the last 2 and 3 years.

Vårt Helsingborg (Our Helsingborg) – a Vision Fund project which will work with unestablished artists in the city to co-create and make a public artwork. Filip will teach everything from placement, sustainability and environmental aspects to financing. The project’s vision is to build self-confidence and knowledge in unestablished artists, who will benefit from a more active cultural grassroots movement in the city. Filip has both Swedish and Iranian heritage and has lived in Sweden all his life.

Söderscen – “Söderscen på Furutorpsplatsen” is a placemaking project by the Department of Urban Planning of the city of Helsingborg. The project aims to transform Furutorpsplatsen into the living room of Söder, the southern part of the city, by engaging the community in multiple activities for different audiences. Everyone can come with their ideas for leisure activities and projects to be implemented at Furutorpsplatsen and the co-ordinators will gladly facilitate their development. Alina is from the Ukraine and has been living in Helsingborg since 2018.
